why philemon?

please don't misunderstand. I mean no blasphemy.

but as I read this morning, i sit and ponder, "why - tell me why would they bother to include the book of philemon in the new testament?"

random little letter (think email-length compared to the rest of paul's letters). written by paul, in jail, letting his buddy Philemon know that he is sending a slave, Onesimus to be a slave for him. that's it. random.

Although it has been used as justification on both sides of the slave argument, I actually like the book of Philemon.

It reminds me that although I might feel that God is whispering (or screaming) to my soul about something another person must do, it is not my place to push the person to do so. If I see God in that person and know that God also speaks to his heart, I can trust that God will speak the same truth directly to him. I do not need to tell the person what he should do, but only trust that God will ... and trust that he will have the faith to listen.
